RedEdge-P Green: The new era of culture management

RedEdge-P Green, the latest innovation in multispectral technology. This sensor is the perfect complement to the RedEdge-P series, but also offers an exceptional standalone solution for specialized applications. Unlike traditional multispectral cameras, the RedEdge-P Green is optimized to capture critical moments throughout the entire crop growth cycle, from early to late stages. With five unique narrow spectral bands, this camera offers hyperspectral-like precision while maintaining the high resolution and radiometric accuracy that characterize MicaSense technology. Whether used alone or in combination with its “sister” cameras (Red and Blue), the RedEdge-P Green is the ideal tool for precision agricultural management.

The science of color for precision agriculture

Choosing the right spectral bands can transform crop monitoring, providing specific and detailed data that goes beyond what is visible to the naked eye. This system offers a range of specialized bands, each designed to excel at specific tasks, from early stress detection to precise ripeness management.

  • 754 nm NIR/Red-Edge Hybrid: Ideal for mapping biomass and crop vigor in sparse canopies, this band detects stress early and monitors ripening accurately.
  • 678 nm Red: Aligned with the chlorophyll-a absorption peak, this is the most sensitive band for tracking ripening and chlorophyll loss in mature plants, improving the effectiveness of indices such as PSRI and NDVI.
  • 570 nm Green: Perfect for detecting subtle stresses in young plants (e.g., nitrogen deficiency) and early ripening. Its superior accuracy makes it a key partner for indices such as GNDVI.
  • 550 nm Green: This band, the narrowest of MicaSense's green bands, offers hyperspectral accuracy for monitoring the vigor of young plants and chlorophyll decline in mature crops, even in sparse canopies.
  • 502 nm Cyan: Excels at analyzing the ratio of chlorophyll to carotenoids, offering superior sensitivity for detecting early ripening and stress due to nutrient deficiencies.

Predicting and Detecting Ripeness

Predicting the exact moment of ripeness is critical to maximizing crop quality. While traditional methods such as NDVI are useful, RedEdge-P Green offers superior accuracy for monitoring changes in chlorophyll, which is the most sensitive indicator of ripeness.

This technology uses optimized spectral bands to provide more specific and reliable results:

  • Optimized NDVI: Our optimized NDVI reduces the risk of saturation, making the index more effective in different conditions.
  • Optimized GNDVI: Thanks to narrower bands, our GNDVI is exceptionally sensitive, ideal for detecting early stress in plants in controlled environments.
  • MTCI (with RedEdge-P Blue camera): When paired with the RedEdge-P Blue camera, the system can replicate the MTCI index developed by the European Space Agency. This index is highly sensitive and unaffected by saturation, making it perfect for crop management.

The Importance of Pigments in Harvest Management

In addition to chlorophyll, analyzing plant pigments provides crucial data that complements standard metrics. Pigments are key to maximizing taste, color, and quality, especially in crops such as tomatoes, carrots, and pumpkins. By monitoring changes in pigments, you can also estimate the overall health of plants and identify problems such as water or nutritional stress in time, often signaled by the appearance of unusual pigments such as anthocyanin.

Detection of Stress and Diseases

The RedEdge-P Green is an essential tool for monitoring plant health at every stage of their life cycle. While traditional multispectral sensors detect stress indirectly, this advanced technology relies on specific methods that get to the heart of the problem. Using indices such as PRI, we measure changes in plant pigments to identify problems related to fertilizers, heat, water stress, or disease long before symptoms are visible. In addition, the optimized GNDVI, with its specialized green bands, measures chlorophyll more accurately by filtering out “noise” from soil and shade. With the addition of a second camera, it is possible to identify specific diseases such as powdery mildew and recognize the pigment anthocyanin, which signals frost stress or nutrient deficiencies. This detailed data is perfect for integrating into machine learning systems, allowing you to accurately identify diseases and weeds and make informed decisions to protect your crops.

Marine Research and Environmental Monitoring

Beyond agriculture, the RedEdge-P Green camera is a powerful tool for marine research and environmental monitoring. By adding a third band, the RedEdge-P Green gives researchers greater ability to classify and study underwater vegetation, such as seagrass beds, which are critical for blue carbon sequestration. Our technology is easy to use, compatible with third-party software, and completely open source, facilitating technology transfer. With the addition of RedEdge-P Green, you can create new 10-band configurations, such as the Complete Set for detailed analysis, Dual Cyan for disease identification with AI, or Dual Yellow for improving common indices such as NDVI and GNDVI and for species and pigment analysis.
